TomTom Traffic Index for 2021 ranked Abu Dhabi as the world’s least congested capital. This is based on the annual survey of 416 cities in 57 countries conducted by the global navigation services provider. Rankings are based on a combination of factors, including the volume and frequency of traffic at intersections and streets at various times of the day, including peak hours.

Abu Dhabi tops global list of capitals with least traffic congestion in 2021Among the topics examined in the study were the number of traffic lights in cities and their programming, as well as their influence on traffic flow. Furthermore, the weather resistance and long-term viability of traffic light systems were assessed. A traffic management plan implemented by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) resulted in 11% congestion in Abu Dhabi.

In addition to improving operational efficiency, improving road assets and infrastructure, and offering more public transportation options to residents, the department’s strategy ensures residents have access to transportation and critical utilities that will enhance the quality of their lives on a daily basis.
